Bruce & Jan Tichenor realized a dream when they retired from Pharmacy practice in the Bay Area; to own and operate a small winery in the Sierra Foothills. In 1992 they bought Story Winery from Ann Story Ousley, which was established in 1973. There are vineyards on the property that were planted in the early 1900's.Bruce grew up in St. Louis Missouri attended St. Louis College of Pharmacy and came to Northern California in 1969 where he practiced Pharmacy for 23 years. Jan grew up in Merrill Oregon attended Oregon State University College of Pharmacy and moved to California in 1970 where she practiced Pharmacy for 22 years.Bruce and Jan have 3 children who help in the winery when needed. Their son, Scott, is a building contractor. Their daughter, Tina, is in the banking business, and daughter Tanya is a Family Practice doctor - all in the Bay Area. They have three grandchildren, Ethan, Miles and Chase. The wines produced at Story Winery reflect the passion that Bruce & Jan have for wine - especially Zinfandel - Big, Bold, and Hearty! We look forward to meeting you Bruce & Jan Tichenor
Description of Vineyards
Since the early 1800's, Zinfandel has been enjoyed as a table grape, as well as a wine grape. Its origin is still questionable, however, DNA research suggests that the structure of Zinfandel is similar to the Primitivo grape. Story Winery has 40 acres of Zinfandel vines, some of which date back to the early 1900's.The Mission grapes were introduced to Amador county during the Gold Rush of 1849 from the Missions of California. A hearty and resistant grape, it yields a very soft and earthy wine. Our Mission grapes fill two acres from which we produce our dry, Red Mission and our Mission Port.Take a drive through Plymouth's beautiful Shenandoah Valley, visit our winery and experience the flavor that is our Mission wines and vineyard-designated, luscious Zinfandels.
