Other Attractions

We have opened up a 3/4 mile hiking trail for our customers that leads to our beach on the Mokelumne where we have shaded picnic tables. There is a rope swing for children and lots of room for pets to run. Please stop by the tasting room to check-in and pick up a bottle of wine.

Winery History

Heritage Oak Winery opened its doors in December 2007. It is built on land Tom's great-great grandfather, James L. Christian, farmed back in the 1860's. The residence, also on the property, was built by Tom's great grandparents, George and Lilla Jane Jack. Tom and Carmela raised their two boys in the same house.

Description of Vineyards

The property, totaling 106 acres, is located on a quiet, rarely traveled road in northern San Joaquin County approximately 6 miles from downtown Lodi. It is a remarkably beautiful piece of land, with a large pristine oak woodland strip traversing its center. This wooded area, approximately 20 acres in size, is the home of deer, coyote, racoon, grey foxes, mink and countless species of birds and other mammals. The property’s southern border is defined by the Mokelumne River which wraps around it for more than a mile and provides opportunity for fishing, picnicking, and other forms of recreation. Vineyards are located on both the upland and bottomland portions of the property.

Tour Information

Tours typically include an initial stop in the vineyard where a white wine is served. There we briefly discuss grape growing and the influences of various practices on the wine. The group then proceeds to the fermentation area where the talk is about fermentation styles. There a red wine recently syphoned from the barrel is served. Depending on the response by the group and the number of questions they may have, the process up to this point may take about 15 to 20 minutes.

After questions have been answered, the guests are free to enter the tasting room and taste the prior vintages available for sale there.

For large groups, the only fee is to cover the cost of the bottles of wine opened to serve the group. Prices range from $15 to $18 a bottle.

Our Exclusive Wines

Our 2007 Sauvignon Blanc is a delightful wine. It is highly aromatic, with strong suggestions of fresh herbs and grapefruit that carry across to the pallet. It is a perfect wine for a light meal of cheeses and fruit or as an aperitif. This wine is of very limited production and is only available through the tasting room where it sells for $15 a bottle.

Our 2006 Zinfidelity is what we fondly refer to as “an adulterous blend of Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon". How could we ever consider blending these two iconic varieties together? Easy. We think it taste great! Zinfidelity is a well balanced, medium bodied, fruity wine that goes well with just about anything. It is available in the tasting room for $16.

Our other blend is called Vino Tinto, which is Spanish for “red wine”. It is a wonderful wine for the dinner table: rich, with a good balance of tannin, oak and fruit. It also sells at the tasting room for $16.

We also make two traditional Zinfandel wines which both sell for $18. Our Estate Grown Zin is from fruit grown in our vineyards. It is aged in French oak and has an elegant, long lasting finish. Our Bartlam Zin comes from fruit grown on the neighboring Bartlam family’s property. It has a pleasant earthy quality that we think is well complimented with just a touch of Petite Sirah and then aged in American oak.

Additional Information

Customers are welcomed to visit the property to hike, watch birds, launch kayaks or pursue other forms of recreation, like painting. Use is limited to foot traffic only, unless other arrangements are made. Guests should check in at the tasting room before embarking.

We opened our trail to the Mokelumne River in March. It is available to all our customers and provides opportunity to enjoy nature with some walking. It is great for birders or adults with children visiting the Lodi wine country.

From the winery, it is 3/4 of a mile to the beach. The trail passes through vineyards, beneath majestic oaks and crosses the river’s flood plain to our private beach. To walk to the beach then continue around the river trail is nearly two and a half miles. Trail markers along the route keep visitors from getting off track. Stop by the tasting room to check in and pick up a map.

Our customers either bring their own food or purchase one of our ready-made picnic bags. Inside the insullated cloth bag is a light meal for two, including a salami, a 4 oz. block of cheese, a package of crackers, an apple and two bottles of water. The bag comes equipped with a table cloth, two cloth napkins, two wine glasses, a cork screw, a paring knife and a cutting board. The bags may be reserved in advance or simply picked up at the tasting room, if available. The cost for the food and use of the bag is $15. Wine is sold separately.
