Winery History

Founded in 1980, Amador Foothill Winery is nestled on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Ben Zeitman and Katie Quinn are co-owners - a husband and wife team with a passion for winemaking. Ben founded the winery and now devotes most of his time to the vineyards. His goal is to ensure that the grapes are harvested when they are at their peak of flavor.

Description of Vineyards

Our 16 acres of estate vineyards are planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Syrah, Grenache, Sangiovese, Aglianico, and Barbera. We purchase Zinfandel grapes from three unique, local vineyards of great distinction.

About the Winemaker

Katie earned a Master of Science Degree in Enology at University of California, Davis in 1983. Her first wine industry position was enologist and cellar worker at Gundlach Bundschu Winery in Sonoma. There she gained a solid foundation in and appreciation of winemaking. In 1986 Katie moved to Amador County when she married Ben Zeitman, the founder of Amador Foothill Winery.

Katie’s winemaking vision is that wines should be varietally true, tasting of their grape origins with a discrete use of oak for texture and complexity. The vivid fruit flavors of her white wines are balanced by crisp acidity, while the reds have concentrated fruit flavors backed with refined tannins. Stylistically, these are food-friendly wines that are inspired by her love for cooking.

Collaboration with the noted Italian wine consultant Alberto Antonini has elevated her winemaking to new heights. “With Alberto’s influence I approach all of our wines with the goal of achieving the best that each vineyard has to offer,” she says.

Additional Information

We produce clean, crisp Sauvignon Blanc and a dry Rosato of Sangiovese with an abundance of natural fruitiness. Our full-flavored Zinfandels are noted for showing an Amador sense of place – powerful, yet elegant. Katie’s Côte, an estate bottled blend of Syrah and Grenache has been extremely well received. Having worked since 1997 with the noted Italian wine consultant, Alberto Antonini, we are a recognized leader in Sangiovese production in California. We are one of few wineries in California growing and producing Aglianico, “the king of the southern Italian reds.”

IT IS TIME FOR SACRAMENTO TO SIP PINK

Jun 10, 2008

BEN'S BLOG Rose sales are up over 60% nationally. We have phenomenal sales of our Rosato of Sangiovese in New York and Boston, yet Sacramento has been a bit slow to embrace the trend.   One possible reason - flash back to the early 1980s - that's right, all the Amador County wineries were selling truck loads of White Zinfandel in Sac City. Well folks, our Rosato is not your mother's White Zin.  First off, it is dry and crisp. Secondly, it pairs well with salmon, shrimp and various Asian...
